3D Archive: Lincoln Memorial

The Story:
The Lincoln Memorial situated on the National Mall in Washington DC honors America's 16th President, known as the Great Emancipator, who preserved the nation during the American Civil War. The Memorial, designed by architect Henry Bacon, stands as an enduring symbol of freedom and hope. The solitary statue of Lincoln in contemplation was carved over the course of four years by the Piccirilli brothers under the supervision of the sculptor Daniel Chester French.

The Lincoln Memorial, which opened to the public in 1922, is still visited by millions each year and has been the site of many large public gatherings and protests including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.

The Solution:
  • 3D scan the memorial on-site using a long-range spherical scanner
  • Create a 3D model from the scan data
  • Create a CAD model using the scan data as a guide
  • Combine the CAD model and the original 3D model to create an accurate replica of the memorial
